A Few Insights from the Podcast

It was a great conversation, and I’d like to share a few insights and career advice from our discussion.

1. How Linkedin Has Transformed Executive Recruiting

One of the major topics we covered was how Linkedin has completely revolutionized executive search. When I started in the industry, recruiters relied on cold calls and resumé databases to find candidates. Today, Linkedin allows us to connect with top talent across the globe in ways that were unimaginable before. It’s become an essential tool in my work as a recruiter.

If you’re a job seeker, having an optimized Linkedin profile is crucial. I always recommend that candidates not only list their skills and accomplishments, but also actively engage with their network. Join industry groups, share your expertise, and connect with people in your field. Being visible on Linkedin significantly increases your chances of getting noticed by recruiters like me.

2. The Evolution of the Recruiting Industry

Jesse and I also discussed how much recruiting has changed over the last 20 years. It’s no longer just about matching resumés to job descriptions. Today, we look for candidates who align with a company’s culture and values, not just their technical skills.

As a recruiter, I’ve seen companies place a higher emphasis on soft skills, emotional intelligence, and adaptability. So, if you’re job hunting, it’s important to demonstrate that you have the expertise to do the job and the ability to fit into a company’s unique environment.

3. Advice from The Recruiter Mindset

During the podcast, I shared some of the key takeaways from my newest book, The Recruiter Mindset. One of the most important points I cover is how to effectively work with recruiters.

Here are a few tips:

  • Understand Our Role: It’s important to remember that recruiters work for the client—the company hiring for the position—not for the candidate. As job seekers, you need to show us how you can be the best solution for the company’s needs.
  • Build Relationships: I always tell candidates that recruiters are long-term partners. Don’t just reach out when you need a job—stay engaged and offer insights. The candidates I remember the most are those who keep in touch and add value, even when they’re not actively looking.
  • Tailor Your Approach: Generic resumés and Linkedin profiles don’t stand out in the competitive job market, especially for executive-level roles. Make sure your materials are customized to each position you’re applying for, and highlight how your experience makes you the best fit for that particular job.

Why This Matters

I truly believe that understanding how to navigate today’s job market is essential for both job seekers and hiring managers. In the podcast, I talked about how tools like Linkedin, combined with the right mindset and strategy, can make all the difference.
